Description

Person on bicycle wearing a facemaskPollution Uptake Measurements for Bicyclists in Portland

presented by Alex Bigazzi, Portland State University

We know that bicycling provides many health benefits.  However, some have wondered if riding near vehicle emissions reduces the beneficial effects.

This presentation will review the latest PSU research quantifying bicyclists' uptake of traffic-related air pollution using on-road measurements in Portland. The research team including Dr. James Pankow and Dr. Miguel Figliozzi has quantified exposure on different types of roadways, respiration responses to exertion level, and changes in blood concentrations after riding.   Implications for riders, planners, and policy-makers will be discussed.

Alex Bigazzi is a doctoral candidate in Transportation Engineering at Portland State University, whose dissertation is entitled "Bicyclists' Uptake of Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Impacts of the Urban Transportation System".
