Oregon Not Yet Accepting Text to 9-1-1

Oregon Not Yet Accepting Text to 9-1-1

Text to 9-1-1 has recently come available in parts of the State of Washington.  Oregon does not yet employ text to 9-1-1 from your cell phone.  Oregon is currently under the practice of VOICE FIRST – should you attempt to send a text to 9-1-1 you will receive an immediate reply that you should contact emergency services by calling 9-1-1.

Oregon is working toward an upgrade to its current infrastructure to allow text to 9-1-1 messaging.  The 75 cent emergency tax you pay per month for every device on your cell phone bill will help fund that upgrade.

Until text to 9-1-1 becomes available, you should ALWAYS make a voice call to 9-1-1 if you are able and safe to do so.

Check out the September 2012 issue of EMS World Magazine which had an article that involved some of our Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications Employees. As it happened, the patient had cameras in his office capturing the event on video
