Lock Cell Phone Keypads

Cell phones pose a significant problem for 9-1-1. Failing to lock the keypad on your cell phone can cause needless delays for other emergency calls. Over half of the calls that come in to the 9-1-1 number are calls from cell phones. Unfortunately, over half of those calls are unintentional and merely cause delays in the 9-1-1 system. Many calls are the result of the keypad not being locked and the cell phone put in a pocket where sitting on it causes it to dial 9-1-1. These unintentional calls can also result from having a cell phone in a pocket or purse without the keypad locked.

We also recommend that you not program 9-1-1 into your cell phone because that increases the chance that you will unintentionally dial the number. Because we must follow up on all calls to 9-1-1 this significantly delays real, intentional calls being answered. Please help all citizens get the assistance they need as quickly as possible by locking the keypad on your cell phone.
