Programs

Environmental Services works with citizens, businesses, and property owners to increase public awareness of bureau programs and projects, including the following.

Sustainable Stormwater Management Program

The Sustainable Stormwater Management Program provides outreach, financial and technical assistance, and education for new and redeveloping properties that incorporate innovative stormwater techniques.

Private Stormwater Management Facilities Operations and Maintenance

Information about maintaining privately owned stormwater management facilities.

Clean River Rewards

Clean River Rewards, the city's stormwater discount program, provides up to a 100% discount on the on-site stormwater management charge on the city's water/sewer utility bill for properties that are managing stormwater on-site.  Clean River Rewards provides stormwater retrofit workshops, publications, and a variety of technical assistance options.

Naturescaping for Clean Rivers

Naturescaping is landscaping that allows people and nature to coexist by using native plants.  Because native vegetation uses less water and fewer (or no) chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it helps keep polluted stormwater from entering our waterways. Free workshops are held periodically throughout the Portland/Multnomah County area.

Clean Rivers Education Programs

Environmental Services provides free environmental education programs for schools and community groups within the City of Portland. These hands-on programs teach about the causes and effects of water pollution and what individuals can do to protect rivers and streams.  Community service projects and curriculum resources are also available.

Community Watershed Stewardship Grants Program

Community Watershed Stewardship Grants provide up to $10,000 to schools, churches, businesses and other community organizations for projects that connect people with watersheds and protect and enhance watershed health. Past project types have included rain gardens, native plant landscaping, natural area restoration, watershed education, depaving, and community gardens.

Watershed Revegetation Program

Environmental Services forms partnerships with public and private landowners to restore degraded stream bank and upland areas by removing harmful non-native vegetation and replanting with native species.

Watershed Management Programs

Environmental Service's watershed management programs evaluate the condition of the city's watersheds and implement projects to improve watershed health.  Local watershed councils, individuals and other organizations are working to identify improvements and drafting action plans. There will be many opportunities for interested individuals and organizations to be informed about and involved with the watershed management planning process.
