Site Address: 10738 SE Foster Road
Date of site approval: 2008
This small lot on the southwest corner of SE Foster Road and SE 108th Avenue was the site of a service station for many years. During that time, gasoline leaks and spills contaminated the soil. After the gas station went ouf of business, the City of Portland purchased the site in 1998 and began to clean it up.
The project removed several hundred tons of contaminated soil. The city left some of the soil in place because it was too difficult to access. In 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded the Portland Brownfield Program a grant to complete the cleanup.
To finish the job, the Brownfield Program used in-situ bioremediation, a process that uses natural bacteria on-site to break down remaining contaminants. The Brownfield Program completed cleanup in 2010 and follow-up testing shows that all contaminants are now below levels of concern.
The city restored the site and installed interpretive signs for the adjacent East Lents Floodplain Restoration Project, now the site of the Foster Floodplain Natural Area.
