Klickitat Green Streets and Neighborhood Greenway

A Klickitat green streetPortland's Comprehensive Plan calls for the city to create neighborhood greenway projects. Environmental Services and the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) completed the Klickitat Green Streets and Greenway Project in 2013. The project created a network of low-traffic streets for pedestrians and bicyclists that safely connect people to schools, parks, natural areas, neighborhood and business districts, and other destinations in a healthy, park-like setting.

Environmental Services added green street planters to the traffic circle at NE Klickitat and Alameda. In addition to managing stormwater runoff, the green Alameda traffic circle/pocket park before greenway constructionstreets improve pedestrian safety and enhance the traffic island as a community pocket park. The footbridges over the planters are tunnel segments from the East Side Big Pipe project.

The Klickitat Greenway project included closing one block of NE Klickitat between 23rd and 24th avenues. The street ran through the Madeleine School campus and the street closure improves student safety and public access. Shallow green street facilities along both sides of the street manage stormwater and create an inviting, park-like community space.

  • Constructed in 2013.
  • There are 23 green street facilities in the greenway project along 60 blocks of NE Klickitat between NE 67th Avenue and North Vancouver Avenue.
  • Green Street facilities keep over 1.6 million gallons of stormwater out of the combined sewer system annually.
  • Numerous trees planted along the greenway manage stormwater, provide shade, improve air quality, and create wildlife habitat.
  • PBOT roadway improvements include speed bumps, sharrows and sidewalk ramps to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and upgraded street corners to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
