Ruth Carr, Elena DeLeonibus and Sophia DeLeonibus, 11 and 12-year-old residents of Northeast Portland, organize the Wolf From the Door, a fundraising event to help fight hunger in our community. To date, this annual benefit has raised over $6,000 for Sisters of the Road Café.
Each year the girls create a restaurant setting at home, cook food, print menus, and prepare craft items for sale at the restaurant gift shop. Classmates from Laurelhurst School donate additional menu items and also work as waitresses. About 100 guests from the neighborhood attend. All proceeds from dinner checks and gift shop purchases are donated directly to Sisters.
The restaurant began modestly when the girls were in 1st grade, and has grown steadily. The 2009 event raised over $1,700. This year has also seen the development of a website that will teach other children how to hold similar fundraisers so that their success can multiply throughout the community. The site will go online before the end of 2009 at: www.wolffromthedoor.org.
The girls also have a PowerPoint presentation and would love to share their story with school, scout, and other youth groups interested in organizing similar events.
