Call for Nominations: 2017 Bill Naito Community Trees Award

Bill Naito

The Urban Forestry Commission created this annual award in honor of the builder and community leader who did so much to beautify Portland with trees. Bill Naito rarely missed an Urban Forestry Commission meeting, which he founded in 1974 and chaired until his death. No one in Portland had been more tenacious than Bill at encouraging the planting of trees. Through his humor, persistence, and imaginative approach to projects, he inspired many individuals to recognize the beauty trees bring to our city. The Bill Naito Community Trees Award is presented to individuals, organizations or projects that have continued Bill's work and reflect his dedication. Click here to see a list of past awardees.

To recognize the many people of Portland that have dedicated their talents, energy and resources to help Portland's trees, the Urban Forestry Commission is seeking nominations for the 2017 Bill Naito Community Trees Award (one individual and one group). Awardees will be honored at Arbor Day festivities in April 2017.

Eligibility

Individuals and groups whose volunteer work, like Bill’s, has made significant enhancements to Portland’s urban forest and inspired others to recognize the beauty and benefits of trees.  Past award recipients have recognized the possibilities for trees in our neighborhoods and have acted to instill the value of trees in our community.

Individuals and groups are eligible to receive an award for specific projects ranging from creatively addressing opportunities for tree planting to tree preservation to communication projects.  In the case of such projects, the recipient of the award can be the project manager (individual) or the project team (group), whichever the nominator sees fit.  Eligible projects are complete or close to completion.

Requirements

The recipients of the Bill Naito award should be an individual or group whose volunteer work* is recognized by the community.  If you know of an individual or group whose work in tree planting, preservation, communication, or stewardship should be considered for this special award, please submit an application. The application must include a one-page story about the nominee, showing their innovative and creative approaches, diligent commitment, and community involvement or community-wide impact.

To help the Urban Forestry Commission’s Education and Outreach Committee in the selection process applications may also include supplemental materials (letters of support, news articles, informational maps or brochures, captioned photographs, ...)

Evaluation

Applications will be reviewed for their degree of impact in the community, quality, innovation and the degree to which the work serves as a worthy example for others to follow.  Please be sure to highlight volunteer work. Winners will be informed before a public announcement is made.

*Volunteer work: voluntary work where the individual or group’s actions are done without pay or obligation, and not as a direct part of their employment.

Nominations are due by midnight on January 27, 2017
