WINTER TRAVEL ALERT: Be alert for dense freezing fog and ice tonight and Thursday morning
(PORTLAND, Ore.) – The National Weather Service is predicting areas of dense freezing fog and icy conditions, creating the potential for hazardous traveling conditions. The public is advised to be alert for dense fog, frost and black ice on roadways, bridges and sidewalks tonight and early Thursday morning.
Temperatures are expected once again to fall near or slightly below freezing. According to the National Weather Service, “Cold and damp air remains trapped under a very strong inversion tonight, resulting in widespread low clouds and fog.” Areas of dense freezing fog are predicted overnight in areas between 500 and 1,500 feet elevation. “Below 500 feet elevation, there will be a few locations where dense fog develops and temperatures fall below freezing as well.” See http://tinyurl.com/arkxxo2.
In conditions with fog and frost, everyone should be cautious, slow down, allow extra distance to brake and stop safely, use headlights and share the road responsibly. In winter weather, everyone is advised to check conditions before venturing out, plan accordingly, and if possible, delay your trip until conditions improve. Driving on ice is extremely hazardous.
Transportation crews are monitoring conditions. If conditions are dry enough later tonight, crews may apply more anti-icing chemical on bridges, overpasses, tunnels, steep hills and other known trouble spots.
