Cul de Sacs

Cul-de-Sacs close one end of a street. Portland uses Cul-de-sacs according to the conditions and needs of a given street.
Cul-de-sacs are intended to change traffic patterns.
Cul-de-sacs are very effective at reducing cut-through and general traffic volume.
Cul-de-sacs cost approximately $20,000 each.
Parking Impacts:
Parking is usually lost near the cul-de-sac to provide adequate turnaround clearances without modification to the existing right-of-way.
Transit Service Impacts:
Cul-de-sacs should not be placed on transit routes.
Emergency Services Impacts:
Emergency response vehicles are impeded by cul-de-sacs. The Portland Fire Bureau reviews all cul-de-sacs that are proposed on their response routes. It is possible to design cul-de-sacs for emergency access using break-away posts.
Noise Impacts:
Cul-de-sacs reduce traffic volume and associated noise.
Other Considerations:
Cul-de-sacs reduce access to all vehicle operators including the local neighborhood. The resulting inconvenience may not be acceptable.
Examples In Portland:
