PROGRAM

The Honors Attorney Program is a two-year program for recent law school graduates, newly admitted lawyers and judicial clerks who are committed to public service.  The program is designed to provide an opportunity for new lawyers to gain public law experience after law school.  The Program actively seeks to recruit, hire, promote and retain a diverse class of Honors Attorneys every two years.  

The Honors Attorney Program provides new attorneys an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a wide range of legal disciplines alongside more experienced attorneys.  Participants will assume substantial individual responsibility for their work, will have the opportunity to gain courtroom experience, will closely observe municipal government in action and will independently draft legal documents.  

Honor Attorneys will also participate in periodic events to introduce them to the work of the City Attorney’s Office and will have the opportunity to attend a variety of training sessions.  Participants will receive on-the-job instruction and mentorship advice from some of the most senior members of the City Attorney’s Office. 

PROGRAM DETAILS

The term of appointment is two years.  During the two-year program, Honors Attorneys will handle a broad variety of assignments from all Practice Groups in the City Attorney’s Office.  Each Practice Group will provide substantive and challenging assignments across a wide spectrum of legal fields. Salary: $69,285 plus excellent benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS

Applicants must be admitted to the Bar of the State of Oregon (or expect to be admitted shortly after appointment) and be eligible to practice law before the courts of the State of Oregon at the time of appointment.  Selection is highly competitive and candidates will be considered based on academic achievement, writing skills and a demonstrated interest in and commitment to government service or public interest law.

  2. Resume;
  3. Writing sample (at least 6 pages); and
  4. Official or unofficial law school transcript.

TIMELINE

September 19, 2016:  Application period begins
November 25, 2016:  All applications must be received by 5:00 PM PST
January 2017:  Candidates selected for interviews will be notified
February 2017:  In-person interviews will be held
March 2017:  Conditional offers extended
September 10, 2017:  Program begins
