Robert Cowan - Public Information Coordinator
Robert joined the Audit Services Division in 1989, after working as a U.S. Navy public affairs specialist/journalist for four years with assignments in print, broadcasting and public information in Australia and Hawaii, and after short stints in other City departments, in banking, and with a part-time administrative and design consulting business.
As the Audit Services Division's Public Information Coordinator, Robert leads the public information, publication, and communication efforts of the division. He works in conjunction with audit staff, the Director of Audit Services, and the elected City Auditor in producing all the division's publications, and coordinates media and public information efforts about the division's work and audit projects.
Robert has been the recipient, and along with audit staff the co-recipient, of numerous awards for report design, public information, media relations and marketing/branding work. The most recent awards include: 2016 - two Platinum and three Gold Hermes Creative Awards for publication design, and in 2014 - one Platinum MarCom Award for media relations/response, and two Gold Hermes Creative Awards for publication design. Between 2012 and 2010 he won five Platinum and five Gold Hermes Awards, and two Platinum and six Gold MarCom Awards .
Robert is a member of the the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA), and the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO).
Robert received a Certification in Public Information in April 2011, from the J. Lindsey Wolf PIO Institute of the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO), following a three-year course of training at annual CAPIO conferences.
He has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, where he specialized in Radio/TV News, and is a graduate of the Department of Defense, Defense Information School's (DINFOS) joint military journalist/public affairs specialist course.
