Today, BDS Director Paul Scarlett attended the Little Moments Big Magic Annual Breakfast at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront as a guest of Mayor Tom Potter. In addition, Customer Service Team members Tiffani Penson and Mikal Shabazz also attended this event as guests of the Big Brothers Big Sister Partnership Development Coordinator, Pamela Weatherspoon.
This very important and meaningful event is put on annually by Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest as a way to inform businesses and individuals on the vast volunteer opportunities and benefits of participating in the program. It is also a time to show appreciation for the many volunteers and contributors that already lend their helping hands to the organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters have been the leader in one-to-one youth services for over a century. This program has successfully created positive friendships that benefit children, volunteers, families, neighborhoods and communities.
The breakfast program opened with the sharing of many successful stories from the 2007 Teen Big of the Year, 2007 Big Sister of the Year, Little Sister, Mother of Little Brother and former Little Brother, Portland Police Officer Willie Haliburton. The program ended with Board of Directors Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer’s summation of the programs continuous efforts to reach as many new volunteers as possible in order to help achieve the 2011 growth goal to serve 6,000 children in our community.
This event definitely proved to be one of the most important community outreach events this year. As the Director, “I feel it is essentially important for youth to have support and a positive role model to help guide them in making successful life decisions”.
