Recently BDS has partnered with Sarah Lechner from Open Meadow to participate in their Career Connections Program. This program is designed to prepare and introduce 18 – 25-year old youths to various career and businesses.
Open Meadow was created in 1971 and has been making a difference in many lives of the North Portland Youth. “The mission is to educate youth in small, relationship-based programs that emphasize personal responsibility, academics, and service to the community”.
In July 2008, BDS invited a group of students from the Open Meadow Career Connections to spend the afternoon with us learning about the services and career opportunities BDS has to offer. BDS Training and Development Officer, Adrienne Edwards offered a hands-on training of the City of Portland’s application process. This training provided the youth with an overview of the process and helpful hints to successfully complete an application.
In addition to the application training, BDS employees gave an overview and job description of their jobs and shared their career experiences. Viktor Palchey, a 2007 IRCO summer intern, was appointed to a permanent Tech I position in the BDS Training Program. Viktor shared his experiences with the students and his plans to become and engineer, showing is a great place to gain knowledge about his field.
The onsite career day ended with a tour of the Document Services Center where all of our customers that are planning a new construction or remodel project come to get their permits. BDS Plan Reviewer, Raphael Goodblatt showed the students how to look up permit information and explained how the development process works from concept to construction.
Thank you to all of the BDS staff and Open Meadows for making this ongoing partnership a success for the Portland youth.
