Our guest speaker Merced Flores presented on 9-22-08 a very open and honest look at his childhood and the struggles he went through as a child and teenager to become the professional adult he is today. It was extremely touching and very enlightening. As an educator Merced has served in many capacities. Mr. Flores served as the first-ever Latino Associate Superintendent at the Oregon Department of Education, Office of Student Services. Between March 1994 and February 2003 he was the State of Oregon Director of Migrant Education. Mr. Flores also served as the Chief of Staff and Director of the ESL/Bilingual Education Program at Oregon’s largest school district, Portland Public Schools.
Merced Flores is currently the Deputy Director and Nation Ideas, Dreams and Resources Coordinator for the Migrant Education Resource Center, a program led by the University Research Company/Center for Human Services in contract with the Office of Migrant Education, U.S. Department of Education.
