As the technology that makes buildings more environmentally sound continues to progress, staffers at the city of Portland’s Bureau of Development Services wonder whether developers’ willingness to use new products and techniques will outpace traditional regulatory testing, which can be costly and time consuming.

That’s why BDS is hoping that by November, it can start work on its proposed New Technology Advisory Committee, which the City Council must still approve. Composed of experts from the fields of architecture, engineering and construction, the committee would work to vet new sustainable building products or techniques that hadn’t yet undergone national testing.
