On October 21st, the Bureau of Development Services Director Paul Scarlett, Mikal Shabazz, Kareen Perkins and Tiffani Penson had the pleasure of attending the 2008 Urban League Equal Opportunity Day Awards Dinner.
The action item for this year was “The State of Black Oregon”. The featured keynote speaker was Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina. Dr. Malveaux focuses on issues such as race, culture, gender and how their economic impacts are shaping public opinion in 21st century America In addition to her contributions on these issues, she is the author of anthologies: Sex, Lies and Stereotypes, Mad Economist and many others. Not only is she extremely intelligent, she is a dynamic, engaging speaker with fabulous wit.
Another highlight of the night was the surprise recognition of an Urban League Volunteer legend Ms. Lauretta Slaughter. Ms. Slaughter has been a volunteer for many years and is the Newsletter Editor of Adult & Senior Services. This recognition came as an unexpected surprise to her. Ms Slaughter was so excited, she commented on being she was out of breath as she spoke. By the standing ovation of the audience and the gleam of the Urban League Staff, you truly felt her dedication and the gratitude and respect the Urban League had for her. It was simply great!
Let’s not forget the overall show itself, President Marcus Mundy did a wonderful relaying Urban League’s message about the ongoing mission to empower communities and change lives. The selection of the Masters of Ceremonies Howard White, Nike Vice President of Jordan Brand was exciting, comical and kept the audience with smiles on their faces.
I recommend that if any of you want a glimpse of the Urban League attend this event next year. It is a great cause and well worth it.
