Simple Ways to Save on Energy (Part 2)

Want to help the environment and save money this winter? Here are some great ideas for saving money and “going green”. Look for “simple ways to save energy” every day during the month of November on the BDS Blog.

  • Solar HouseNever use the range or oven to heat the kitchen. This can be dangerous as well as energy-inefficient.
  • Replace baseboard heaters with a ductless heat pump (Energy Alliance and BPA have good incentives for doing this work this year).
  • Add more energy-efficient insulation to your attic, with the appropriate R-value, or resistance to heat flow, for your climate and the type of heating in your home.
  • Apply weatherstripping around your attic door to prevent heat from escaping.
  • Turn down your home thermostat two degrees and save 24 kilowatt hours a month. It might not sound like much, but it adds up.
  • Buy a programmable thermostat, especially if your home is vacant most of the day. Set it up to turn on half-hour before anyone arrives home, and set it to turn off when the house is vacant.
  • Adjust your thermostat to a comfortable temperature and wait. Turning your thermostat up or down dramatically wastes energy and increases your heating costs.
  • If wood is plentiful where you live, have a professional install a DEQ certified wood-burning stove.
  • Dust or vacuum all radiator surfaces frequently. Dust is a wonderful insulator and tends to build up on radiators baseboard heat vents, keeping heat from dispersing.
  • Lower your hot water thermostat 10 degrees but no lower than 120 degrees. You will still get all the hot water you need and save 25 kilowatt hours a month.
