Every year the Portland Schools Foundation invites more than 100 other businesses and civic leaders to spend a day in one of Portland's schools. The goal of this program is to increase the civic engagement and community support to improve our city's public schools.
Last year Director Paul Scarlett and Outreach Program Coordinator Tiffani Penson attended Benson and Jefferson high school. This year on behalf of the bureau Tiffani Penson participated at Harvey Scott Elementary with Principal Deanne Froehlich.
The day started out exciting with Principal Froehlich multi-tasking and being pulled in every direction handling student issues, attending to recess and lunch duty. The entire office staff and teachers play a vital part in the everyday success of the daily business. Students are smart, respectful and they have a genuine admiration for their principal and her staff.
Many of the students come from diverse backgrounds, thus creating an interesting environment with opportunity to learn about different cultures. Not only is Principal Froehlich interested in the education of her students, she is interested in making them feel special on their birthdays. Every month she has a birthday party for all of the students whose birthday falls in the month. It was my lucky day because I got to share in the October birthday party festivities. All of the participating students were excited and thankful for the great cupcakes, cards and candy.
"Principal Froehlich is doing an excellent job on all levels to provide her students with a well rounded opportunity to succeed academically and socially", says Tiffani.
