Landlord Training Recap

The 2015-2016 series of the City of Portland’s Landlord Training Program marks the sixteenth training series coordinated by the City of Portland, Bureau of Development Services, Neighborhood Inspections Team. Funding for this last series of the Landlord Training Program was provided from the Portland Police Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue, the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, and the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.  

Landlord TrainingThe Landlord Training Program generally offers eight training sessions annually, held at various locations throughout the City. The training sessions are divided into four in the Spring and four in the Fall. This past year over 750 people attended. This translates into the Landlord Training Program theoretically impacting a total of 25,235 rental units, of which 22,393 are in Portland (this is based upon statistical information provided by attendees). 

The Landlord Training program reaches out to the city’s residential landlords and property managers to provide useful, actionable information that can be used to improve the health and livability of Portland neighborhoods. With the ongoing success of the training series, the City is continuing to receive the benefit of the program’s original intent over two decades ago — to promote community safety and neighborhood livability by elevating the likelihood of rental housing managers using responsible, effective management and maintenance practices.  To date over 18,000 Portland area property owners and managers have attended these training classes representing over 385,000 rental units.

The Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability joined the program sponsors this year, providing additional information about recycling for properties that have 4 or more units.  Along with best practices, trainees get actionable information about fire prevention issues from the Portland Fire Marshal’s Office in addition to information provided by Crime Prevention Specialists, Neighborhood Response Team Police Officers, and information specific to Property Maintenance/Housing minimum standards for the City of Portland.
