Odor Notification

odor control equipment photoOdors are usually not perceptible beyond the boundaries of the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Occasionally, plant maintenance projects on odor control equipment will release odors that may be perceptible in neighborhoods surrounding the plant.

Environmental Services issues advance notices of maintenance projects that may result in odors outside the plant’s boundaries.

Current Maintenance Projects:

3/11/2014 – 3/14/2014
Digester #9 will be emptied and taken out of service. This digester is scheduled for routine preventative maintenance and cleaning. We perform these routine cleaning procedures to maximize digester productivity and remove any debris that cannot be biologically digested. Digester productivity is one major way we reduce the solids treated at the plant. One byproduct of this digestion process is methane gas, which we can use at the plant to do a number of things (running generators and heating water just to name a few). During the draining process, it is possible for odors to escape the digester. While we don’t expect these odors to be perceptible outside the confines of the plant, this is a possibility.
We know these odors can be unpleasant and we make every effort to reduce them. Odor control is important to us at the plant, and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know of odors in your area.
