Homeowners insurance does not cover flooding. Over the course of a 30-year mortgage, there is a 26% chance that flooding will damage a property in Portland’s 100-year floodplain. Flood insurance is available through your local insurance agent.
Do You Live In a Floodplain?
To find out if you live in a floodplain or where your property is in relation to the floodplain, call 503-823-6892 or view floodplain maps at the City of Portland Development Services Center, 1st Floor, 1900 SW 4th Avenue.
You can also get floodplain information for your property online. Go to PortlandMaps.com, type in an address and click the "search" button. When the description of your property comes up, float your cursor over the "Maps" tab and click on "Hazard" to see if your property is in or near a floodplain.
More than 60% of the flood insurance claims that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) receives are from flood insurance policyholders that have property outside of the mapped 100-year floodplain.
National Flood Insurance Program
Portland is part of the National Flood Insurance Program, which makes it possible for Portland residents to purchase federally backed flood insurance. By purchasing flood insurance, you can protect yourself from significant losses. Talk to your insurance agent about your coverage, and also check to see if you have sewer backup insurance.
Floodplain property owners in the City of Portland save 25% on flood insurance premiums thanks to the City's participation in the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS rewards communities that take steps to reduce the risk of flooding, above and beyond the minimum actions required for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program. Check with your insurance carrier to be sure they have current maps and that you are receiving a 25% discount. To get the discount, your insurance policy must indicate that you are in Portland, Community #410183.
Portland earned a Class 5 rating in the CRS program. Class ratings run from 10 to 1. Only 3% of the other CRS communities in the country have ratings as high or higher than Portland’s. Our rating is based on Portland's commitment to restore the natural functions of floodplains, our comprehensive approach to stormwater management, updated floodplain codes, environmental zoning, available public information, and the amount of the City's floodplain that is designated as parks and open space.
