The rain garden at the intersection of NE 22nd Avenue and Sandy Boulevard is one of five rain gardens along Sandybetween NE 16th and NE 42nd avenues. Environmental Services worked with the Portland Bureau of Transportation to construct these facilities as part of transportation improvements along Sandy Boulevard. Instead of directing stormwater runoff into sewer pipes, the landscaped rain gardens capture and slow stormwater and allow water to soak into the ground, as soil and vegetation filter out pollutants. The stormwater facilities replenish groundwater supplies and help meet transportation improvement goals including: Improved pedestrian and bicycle safety
-
An enhanced pedestrian environment that promotes walking and supports local businesses
-
Increased pedestrian crossings and pedestrian access to businesses
-
Enhanced transit access and stops
Integrating Green Streets into our urban environment helps restore greenspace and natural systems that enhance watershed health. They also improve pedestrian safety, enhance surrounding properties, provide habitat, and cool the air.
