11. Common Reed

Common Reed (Phragmites australis)

  • Large, perennial, grasscommon reed species with plume-like flowering stalks
  • Woody hollow stems can grow 1 to 4 meters tall
  • Likes roadside ditches, marshes, swamps, brackish estuaries, and alkaline wetlands
  • Seeds are shed from November through January and dispersed by wind, water, and animals
