Environmental Services is working on cured-in-place sewer pipe-lining repair projects in several Portland neighborhoods. The project is repairing about 12,000 feet of sewer pipe ranging in diameter from eight inches to 54-inches.

In 2012, Environmental Services' contractor completed work at several project sites. The contractor will complete work at the remaining sites in summer 2013.

Cured-in-place pipe-lining eliminates the need to excavate trenches to repair sewer pipes, so the work creates far less surface disruption. Repair crews access sewer lines through manholes in the street. At each work site, crews set up a pump and temporary surface lines to pump sewage around the work area, and then insert a flexible resin liner that adheres to the inside of the pipe. Hot water or steam circulated through the pipe hardens the liner and gives the pipe a new interior surface.

Maintaining Sewer Service During Lining

The cured-in-place pipe liner blocks the lateral pipes that connect buildings to the main sewer line. So while the liner cures, the project either temporarily interrupts sewer service, or the contractor temporarily pumps the building's sewer flow to another sewer line.

After the liner hardens, the contractor cuts out the lateral connections and restores sewer service. The contractor will ask you to limit your building's water use until your sewer service is restored. Before the work starts, city staff will contact each residence and business and help create individual bypass plans.

Special Needs

Interrupting sewer service is inconvenient but in most cases people are able to limit water use during the lining process without major disruption.  If a temporary sewer service interruption will be a hardship for you because of a medical condition, home business operation or other reason, the contractor will work to accommodate your needs.
