Environmental Services is building 13 green street facilities near SE Ivon and 41st and near SE Madison and 57th (see maps A and B, below). We will also be retrofitting two facilities at SE Grant and 29th (see map C, below). Green streets keep stormwater runoff out of the combined sewer system and help prevent sewer backups in basements during heavy rain. They also beautify the community and filter and clean stormwater runoff.
The project will remove some on-street parking spaces and some street trees to create space for the new stormwater management facilities. Environmental Services will replace street trees removed for the project with trees suited to the location. Environmental Services does not remove or replace street trees without evaluation and approval from the city’s Urban Forester.
Construction is ongoing, and will continue into April. Crews are currently working at the intersection of SE Division and 43rd (see map A) and at SE 41st and Ivon. Next, they will start work at SE 58th and Madison (see map B). Crews will continue to work on several adjacent facilities at once for the duration of the project.
Stormwater runoff can affect water quality in rivers and streams. Portland uses green streets, ecoroofs, trees and other green infrastructure to increase sewer system efficiency, and protect water quality, public health, and the environment. Green infrastructure keeps stormwater out of the sewer system, filters pollutants, provides habitat and increases neighborhood green space for healthier watersheds.
This project is part of the Tabor to the River Program, which combines innovative stormwater management techniques with sewer repairs and improvements to stop basement flooding, manage stormwater more naturally, and to restore watershed health. The program area extends from Mr. Tabor to the Willamette River between SE Hawthorne and SE Powell boulevards. For more information on the Tabor to the River Program, click here.
