Environmental Services is finished working on two inner southeast Portland sewer projects (see maps):
- Replace 100-year old public sewer pipes that are in poor condition on SE 2nd and 3rd avenues between Alder and Stark and restore the intersection of SE 3rd and Alder.
- Install an underground vault on SE Alder between SE 6th and Grand to divert combined sewage during heavy rain storms.
As a result of this project, the sewer in the area will function better, basement backups occurrences will be reduced, and the intersection of SE 3rd and Alder will be improved for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.
Maintaining Portland's Sewer System
Over one-third of Portland’s 2,500 miles of sewer pipes are more than 80 years old. Projects to replace or repair aging sewers are important for protecting water quality, public health, and the environment.
