This Sunday: Nature Along North Portland Sunday Parkways

cycling by green streetIt's here--this Sunday, July 28, is North Portland Sunday Parkways.  Check out the route map and activities here. As you’re out riding, walking, rolling and strolling, you’ll be enjoying some of the green infrastructure that manages stormwater and protects the Willamette River and Columbia Slough.  Did you know...

  • Almost the entire route is in the Columbia Slough Watershed (meaning, much of the rain that falls here eventually makes its way to the Columbia Slough).
  • Portland’s parks and trees help manage that rain naturally, soaking it into the ground, filtering out pollutants and slowing down the flow of rain or keeping it out of pipes.  Portland’s street trees alone provide us over $18.6 million in benefits, like savings in stormwater treatment costs, carbon storage, and air quality improvement.
  • You’ll see lots of new trees planted along the route.  Thanks to neighbor volunteers, Friends of Trees, and other partners of Environmental Services, we’ve planted 32,200 new street and yard trees citywide since 2008—many of those in North Portland.
  • There are several green street facilities along the route, which are working even though it’s not raining! In the dry season, they’re still providing us many benefits.
  • You’ll pass along the Willamette Bluff, which has great views of the city and river, and is also the site of city restoration efforts to remove invasive species, control erosion, improve habitat and prevent wildfires.  You may spot an eagle, peregrine falcon, or osprey soaring over the bluff and river.

Stop by the Environmental Services booth at Kenton Park! You can...

  • Find out how you can help keep green street facilities in your neighborhood looking good
  • Do some kids’ activities about the environment
  • Pick up a Stormwater Cycling Tour map
  • Get some free native plant seeds
