11-22-13: SW 86th Avenue Pump Station Construction Update

SW 86th Avenue Pump Station Project Construction Update: November 22, 2013

Environmental Services works to protect water quality and the environment through wastewater collection and treatment, sewer construction and maintenance, stormwater management, and stream and watershed restoration.  When theSW 86th Avenue Pump Station is complete at the end of 2015, it will increase the capacity of the Fanno Basin Sewer System to ensure that the system can handle all wastewater flows during large rain storms.  It will protect public health and watershed health, specifically Fanno Creek.

DEVELOPMENTS OF NOTE

Construction crews continue to install the underground wet well and pump facility structure. The second of four concrete pours of the wet well structure will take place on Saturday, November 23. The concrete pour is a non-stop operation all day.  Each section will be at least a month apart in order to let the concrete cure and to prepare for the next section.

Due to the groundwater and geotechnical conditions, the wet well and pump facility is being constructed using a caisson method.  The caisson is a watertight structure, which will be approximately 26 feet in diameter and over 40 feet deep.  The structure appears to be above ground right now, but the weight of the concrete will gradually push the structure below ground.

WHAT WE'VE HEARD FROM YOU

  • In the past several days, three calls were received from trail users reporting a sewer odor coming from the Fanno Pump Station.  Maintenance crews visited the site; however, no odors were detected.  BES staff are continuing to look into the complaints.
