Environmental Services is early in the planning stages for a stormwater management project near the Stephens Creek headwaters. Stormwater in this area typically runs off of streets and private properties directly into Stephens Creek carrying oil, dirt and other pollutants with it.
Project planners are considering four locations to install neighborhood stormwater management facilities (see map) that will collect runoff from streets, slow it down and allow pollutants to settle out before the water flows into Stephens Creek. The project will protect water quality and improve wildlife habitat and stream health.
The planning phase will guide the selection of the most beneficial, cost-effective sites to move forward to the design phase and construction. Construction may include excavation, wetland enhancement, meandering stream segments, installing pipe, removing invasive plants and restoring native plants.
Environmental Services is working with Portland Parks & Recreation on this project.
