Photo Radar Citations
Photo Radar citations are issued as a result of an automatic camera photographing an intersection or other section of a City street, and recording an infraction of the law. The most common citations issued are for exceeding the speed limit, failure to observe speed limits in school zones, and entering an intersection after the light has already turned red. This last one is referred to as "Failure to obey a traffic control device."
Because these infractions have so much potential for a tragic outcome, the City treats these tickets very seriously. The first notification of the ticket comes to the City of Portland's CityFleet office, as the City of Portland is listed as the owner on all City vehicles, and all Photo Radar tickets are initially issued to the City.
CityFleet will trace the license plate to find out which bureau the vehicle is assigned to, and then will forward the details surrounding the ticket to the bureau's fleet liaison. The bureau's fleet liaison gets this notification and then determines the identity of the driver of the vehicle on the day the citation was issued. Driver's information -- name, address, driver's license number, and date of birth -- are sent back to CityFleet, and then to the Court, which reissues the ticket to the actual driver.
It is the sole responsibility of the driver to pay the fine.
