Summary:
The Orpinela project includes a guesthouse and a studio that are sited on a heavily wooded 1.8-acre site with an existing house. The studio has not been built but the footings and plans are in place for future build out. The addition provides living space and a music studio and was inspired principally by the owner’s adult son Shawn’s need for an inspirational as well as non-toxic teaching and recording space. How the space was designed and built was dictated principally by the family’s commitment to preserve the beauty and natural function of their forested property and the express need to create a healthy indoor environment. Radiant floor heating, a vegetated rooftop and daylighting among other measures helped the Orpinelas meet these objectives while increasing the project team’s familiarity with green building strategies. The project articulates contextually appropriate design in a way that benefits both humans and nature alike.

Project Highlights:
  • Radiant floor heating
  • Ultra-low toxic materials
  • Pier footing foundation
  • Ecoroof
  • Daylighting
