Establishing new service
To establish or change your collection service, call your garbage and recycling company directly.
Find your garbage and recycling company.
Renters must be provided garbage, recycling, and composting service. Property owners are responsible for setting up and paying for service for their tenants.
Container size and collection frequency determine cost
There are different levels of service based on garbage container size. You can increase or decrease the size of your garbage container to fit your household’s needs. Call your garbage and recycling company to make changes to your service level. Garbage roll carts come in 20-gallon*, 35-gallon, 60-gallon and 90-gallon sizes and are provided by your garbage and recycling company. Weekly composting and recycling are available with standard service.

*Some 20-gallon service customers will receive a modified 35-gallon roll cart.
**Does not include regular garbage collection. Customers with this service may call their garbage and recycling company to schedule occasional on-call garbage collection for $9.05 per pick-up.
***Terrain charge for westside service
In most of the southwest and northwest portions of Portland, a "terrain charge" is included in the rate. The topography in these areas creates conditions that lead to higher service costs. This includes narrow and dead-end roads, hills, non-grid street layouts and greater distance between houses.
Low-income households with health condition related waste
Low-income households with excess health condition related garbage, such as adult incontinence supplies, are eligible for extra garbage capacity at no additional cost. Call 503-823-7202 or e-mail wasteinfo@portlandoregon.gov for program details and an application form.
Non-curbside service for disabled customers
Non-curbside collection of all garbage, recycling, and composting carts is available at no charge for disabled customers meeting eligibility criteria. Call 503-823-7202 or e-mail wasteinfo@portlandoregon.gov for program details and an application form.
Container set-out information
Containers out by 6 a.m.
Your garbage and recycling company will arrive at your house between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Because route schedules change, be sure containers are out by 6 a.m.
Container placement
Place your container within three feet of the curb or roadway. Don't block sidewalks or driveways. Within 24 hours of collection, remove emptied containers from the curb.
Contact your garbage and recycling company to arrange for non-curbside service if no one in your household is physically able to take containers to the curb.
If you live in a duplex, triplex, or fourplex that has signed up for non-curbside service, don't put roll carts on steps, decks or patios that are more than three feet above ground level. Your garbage and recycling company will suggest the best place to put these containers.
Driver misses or late set outs
If you forgot to place your container at the curb by 6 a.m., and the driver was not able to pick up your garbage or composting roll cart, call your garbage and recycling company within 24 hours. You will have two options:
- Set out two containers (not to exceed double your normal service level) on your next pickup day at no additional charge
- Pay $7.95 for the driver to return before your next pickup day
If you do not call your garbage and recycling company's office within two business days, these options will not be available to you.
If you forget to set out your recycling roll cart, you will be asked to set out your extra recyclables on the next regularly scheduled collection day. If your garbage and recycling company misses your house on your pickup day, call their office as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for the driver to return.
Holidays
Christmas and New Year’s Day are the only two holidays during the year when collection will not occur. During these holiday weeks, all collections will be pushed back one day following the holiday. Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.
Severe Weather
Curbside collection information during severe weather conditions.
During severe weather conditions, driving may be hazardous and the collection of garbage, compost and recycling may be delayed or postponed for Portland residents. In the case of severe weather, collection will be prioritized in the following order:
- Garbage
- Composting
- Recycling
When garbage or compost collection must be delayed or postponed, a reasonable effort will be made to pick up before the customer’s next scheduled collection day. Evening and Saturday collections may be necessary.
In the event of a severe weather delay, please leave your roll carts at the curb to accommodate collection.
If garbage or compost collection must be delayed or postponed to the next scheduled collection day, twice the amount of the current subscribed roll cart size will be collected on the next regularly scheduled collection day at no additional charge.
If recycling collection must be delayed or postponed it will be collected the next regular collection day.
