Energy Efficiency and Renewables for City-owned Facilities
In 1990, Portland City Council adopted a new Energy Policy that included specific and measurable goals for city bureaus to seek out cost-effective improvements that cut energy bills and improve efficiency. The City’s Energy Office (now a function of BPS) launched a new initiative, the City Energy Challenge, that brought technical and financial resources to facility managers seeking ways to save natural resources and money. Today this small program has a big list of accomplishments. More than 150 city projects have been completed with upgrades and renewables resulting in annual utility savings of $4.2 million.
