Welcome, Introductions and Reflections from Last Meeting (15 minutes)

• Description: Brief self-introductions and reflections from last meeting

Integrating Equity (10 minutes)

Presenter: Bob Glascock, Bureau of Planning and Sustainability

Description: An overview of Portland Plan’s equity framework and how equity will be integrated into the Education and Youth Success PEG’s work.

Schools as Center of Community (80 minutes)

Presenters: Deborah Stein and Bill Cunningham, Bureau of Planning & Sustainability

Description: Opportunities and limitations regarding use of schools for a wide array of inter-generational community activities (with examples from different school districts in Portlandand elsewhere). (15 minutes for presentation; 65 minutes for discussion)

Discussion questions:

• How can schools contribute more as centers of community through shared use of facilities?
• Are there any contemporary models for school buildings in the Portland area, or other cities, that offer insights into the changing role of schools as centers of community?
• Should a school’s location matter in deciding what community uses may co-locate with a school? (e.g., schools in less well served neighborhoods; schools located in neighborhood/commercial centers versus residential neighborhoods)
• What are the concerns/challenges with community use of schools from the perspective of school districts?
