For Property Managers - Your Guide to Multifamily Food Composting

Property managers around Portland have already implemented successful food scrap collection programs at their multifamily buildings. Whether you are responding to requests from your residents to be part of Portland’s food composting program or are interested in having a more sustainable community, we can help you.

We can assist you in evaluating whether or not your building is a good candidate, offer steps to take to create a successful program and provide you and your residents educational materials as well as kitchen pails to get started.

Multifamily Composting Materials Ordering Information

We offer free educational materials for your residents as well as signs for the compost collection area. See descriptions below for specific information. Ordering is easy! You can:

Property Manager Guide 

A guide to walk you through setting up and successfully managing composting in your multifamily community.

Indoor/outdoor 18" x 24" durable plastic signs have a big visual impact. Display above food scrap collection containers.

How to Compost guide and magnet – for residents 

  • Brochure: can be ordered individually, or in a door hanger bag.
  • Refrigerator magnet (5" x 7”): can be ordered individually, or in a door hanger bag.
  • Door Hanger Bags: Bags include: "how-to compost" guide and refrigerator magnet. Hang them yourself or have City staff provide this service free of charge.

Kitchen pail (limited quantities available) – for residents

  • 2 gallon pail with lid and handle.
  • Property managers may place one order, not to exceed the number of units in the building(s). 
  • Each pail will include a composting guide and magnet.
