What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a relationship between a farmer and member of the community. In a CSA, the community (households that are “shareholders” or “subscribers”) to provide the financial support for the season’s farming by purchasing a share of the harvest or becoming a member of the farm. Once harvesting begins, shareholders typically receive weekly shares of seasonal vegetables. Shares can also include fruit, eggs, dairy, meat and poultry depending on the farm’s production capabilities. By becoming a member of a farm, shareholders allow the farm to cover operating costs and provide security by assuming some of the growing risk with the farmer. In exchange, consumers are able to directly support the production and distribution of the season’s harvest, eat the freshest, local food available, support small farms, and protect farmland — a boon for farmers, consumers, and the broader community.
