Candidates with little or no fire service experience are encouraged to apply for Portland Fire & Rescue’s (PF&R) Firefighter Trainee Program.

The Firefighter Trainee Program is designed to give individuals with little or no experience the opportunity to be successful in the Fire Service by receiving hands-on exposure to the requirements of this career. Candidates will receive exposure to the tools of the trade and develop the physical fitness level required of a firefighter.
During this program, Firefighter Trainees work a 40-hour work schedule. Firefighter Trainees will work a 40-hour work schedule as they develop the basic skills to advance to Phase II training which involves more advanced training to further develop a candidate to meet the demands of emergency response, code enforcement and customer service. Candidates who are successful in the recruitment process may be provided opportunities to attain their EMT-B certification which is a requirement for the position.
Firefighter Trainees will work with candidates from the Firefighter Recruit eligibility list to develop the skills and traits necessary to attain the desired qualifications and characteristics desired to advance through the training program. Please note that a minimum of an EMT-B certification is required before beginning the Academy.

Firefighter Recruit Academy
