Portland Fire & Rescue still on scene of early morning Commercial Fire
Crews from across Portland's East side worked for over an hour this morning to extinguish an early morning fire that ripped through one building and threatened two others.
Engine 24 arrived first on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire from the building of origin. Reports of transients living within the structure were confirmed and firefighters first determined that all people were out of the building. The volume of fire, and unknown condition of the vacant building, prompted incident command to take a defensive strategy--protecting adjacent structures and containing the fire to a single building. Once the fire was significantly reduced in volume, operations turned offensive with firefighters entering the building and extinguishing the remaining fire.
The building been boarded up and occupied by transients. These situations present challenges to fire crews who must first gain entry and then negotiate a structure that in many cases will have been compromised before the fire.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters are reported in association with this fire.
Cause is under investigation.
