Over the years, dozens of domestic ducks and geese have been abandoned at the man-made pond in Westmoreland Park (and other parks as well.) Not only is that illegal, domestic ducks and geese are ill-equipped for life in the wild, suffering frequent injuries and illness.
As part of the City's long-term restoration project at Crystal Springs Creek, which runs through the park, the man-made pond will be removed next year, putting those ducks and geese in a tough spot.
Fortunately, staff and volunteers from the City's Bureau of Environmental Services, USDA Wildlife Services, and the Audubon Society of Portland gave their time Monday to capture the 21 domestic ducks and 8 domestic geese at the pond.
Most were relocated to permanent homes Monday afternoon; some ducks have foot problems common to urban ducks who spend their time walking on concrete and will be treated at Audubon's Wildlife Care Center until they're healthy enough to go to their permanent new homes.
Many thanks to everyone who helped these ducks and geese find new homes!
