Background on Batterer Intervention Programs
These programs were first established in the U.S. in the late 1970s, and criminal courts increasingly mandated abusive men to these programs in the 1990s. Based on the number of programs identified in a recent study, the number of years they had been in existence, and the average number of men in them (Dalton, 2007), an estimated one hundred thousand men in the U.S. have been sentenced to complete a batter intervention program.
