After taking office in January 2013, I set three priorities for the first half of my first year in office: Crafting a budget; fighting for funding for our public K-12 schools; and addressing the relationship between the police and the community.
Step 1 was the budget. We had the largest shortfall in recent history, which needed to be addressed. The answer required cut-backs in every bureau. But by May, we had balanced the budget.
Next was fighting in Salem for a no-cuts budget for our K-12 schools. Toward that end, I teamed up with almost 50 other Oregon mayors to tell our state lawmakers that enough is enough – that the welfare of our public schools must be everybody’s priority. We’re proud of the role we played in being a champion of Oregon’s public schools.
Third was changing the relationship between Portland Police and the community. With the help of Police Chief Mike Reese, we have begun the process of building real trust between excellent police officers and the people they serve in every neighborhood inPortland.
