Legislators gather at City Hall

Mayor and lawmakersWednesday, Jan. 30 – Approximately 20 state lawmakers came to City Hall this morning to hear members of the Portland City Council discuss priorities for the next legislative session.

The 2013 Legislature convenes Monday, Feb. 4, at the Capitol in Salem.

Mayor Hales and Commissioners Nick Fish, Amanda Fritz, Steve Novick and Dan Saltzman outlined an array of lawmaking topics, ranging from public safety and housing, to curbing gun violence.

“This is a great opportunity to sit down together and find out how much we have in common,” Mayor Hales said. “The truth is: we have a lot in common. This could be a session in which we get a great deal accomplished for Oregonians.”Sen. Johnson

Martha Pellegrino, director of government relations for Portland, said the meeting allowed the state lawmakers and the state’s largest city to connect on a policy level, before the start of the session.

Among the lawmakers on hand were Sens. Betsy Johnson, Ginny Burdick, Rod Monroe, Chuck Thomsen, Diane Rosenbaum and Elizabeth Steiner Hayward. Also present were State Reps. Mitch Greenlick, Alissa Keny-Guyer, Lew Frederick, Chris Garrett, Jeff Reardon, Jennifer Williamson, Michael Dembrow, Jessica Vega Pederson and Shemia Fagan.

Many legislative aides also attended.
