Laika seeks Oscar gold

FRIDAY, FEB. 22, 2013 – “ParaNorman,” the 2012 film by Portland-based Laika productions, is up for an Oscar nomination on Sunday at the Academy Awards presentation.

“ParaNorman” was nominated in the category of Best Animated Feature. The ceremony will be held a tHollywood’s Dolby Theatre and will be broadcast starting at 4 p.m. Sunday on ABC affiliate stations, such as KATU in Portland.

The film focuses on the adventures of a misunderstood boy who takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse. It was directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell, and written by Butler.

Laika creates its animation at a studio in Northwest Portland.

 

Comic Con Swings Into Portland

 

THURSDAY, FEB. 21, 2013 –Portland plays host this weekend to a wide array of non-humans, extraterrestrials, androids, mutants and, worse, publicists.

Stan LeeWizard World Portland Comic Con runs 3 to 8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the Oregon Convention  Center,777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Guests include Stan Lee, famed comic book creator and one of the geniuses behind Marvel Comics; Brent Spiner of “Star Trek” fame; Morena Baccarin of “Firefly;” and James Marsters of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
