July 9, 2013 | TDN.com-- The city of Portland is putting a 9-foot-high mesh screen on a span known as "The Suicide Bridge" to try to keep people from leaping off it.
At least 17 people have committed suicide in the last decade by jumping from the Vista Bridge, three this year.
City Council member Steve Novick said Tuesday the barrier is expected to cost $236,000 and be temporary _ while the city looks for money for a long-term solution.
Estimates are it would cost $2 million to $3 million for a permanent suicide barrier that's architecturally appropriate to the structure on the National Register of Historic Places.
There's no reliable estimate of the number of people who have jumped from the bridge since it opened in 1926. READ FULL ARTICLE
