July 25, 2013 | Portland Business Journal-- The number of bike riders that have crossed the Hawthorne Bridge this year is about to hit the big 1-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh mark.
The millionth rider of 2013 is expected to peddle over the Hawthorne on Friday morning. The occasion will be marked by the electronic Hawthorne Bicycle Bridge Counter, which resets each year. The counter was installed last Aug. 8.
Between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., people using the bridge to reach their downtown destinations can get free "millionth-trip themed doughnuts" and get their pictures taken next to a “One Million + Me” sign. The grub and party favors are available to those who cross the bridge by bicycle, skateboard or other non-motorized means.
