July 13, 2014 | Oregonlive.com-- How dare Steve Novick quote Winston Churchill in the name of finding a way to tax us for street maintenance. (Commissioner Steve Novick pledges to 'never surrender' in fight for more street money, July 10.) Nothing on his agenda or the City Council agenda is worthy of a Churchill quote that was designed to rally support against Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany. That's an insult to all the British, and many Americans, who made the ultimate sacrifice to stop the Hitler onslaught.
Novick and Mayor Charlie Hales have dug themselves into a huge pothole on the street fee issue and have little chance of getting out. The real issue is the years of street neglect while City Council members were funding pet projects. It's time Novick, the mayor and the other council members figure out where to make budget cuts in order to take care of basic needs such as street maintenance.
