Citywide Equity Committee Meeting Notes

General Meeting – Thursday November 1, 2012   9-11am

Location: Office of Equity and Human Rights – Steel Conference Room



Danielle Brooks announced she’s leaving the City of Portland.  Dante informed the group that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the City of Portland completed a settlement agreement. He also encouraged people to attend the Thursday November 1st 2pm public hearing at City Council.



Dante sent an email to the Directors regarding the Citywide Equity Committee (CEC) recruitment and let them know the application would be posted on OEHR’s website.  Dante also stated that the responses he has received so far from Director’s have been good.  Some directors however had concerns about not being involved in the process.   

Dante informed CEC members there would be two representatives from each bureau on the CEC.  One member will be the primary member and the other will be the alternate.  He also stated that a decision still needs to be made regarding who will be on the selection committee.  The selection process will include 30 minute conversations within groups as part of the recruitment process.  Also, interview questions will be sent out ahead of time for people to prepare.  Applications will go out November 5th and completed applications need to be returned by November 19th.  The plan is to have the committee seated in December.  It was suggested that a December gathering be held for members of the current group. 


The strategic plan workgroup has put together a draft of bylaws, goals, and priorities for the first year.  The group also put together a mission statement, vision, and values. This is solid framework for the CEC committee.  It was stated that the CEC might want to make changes before it is adopted. 



Dante informed the group that he would like to invite Dr. James Mason to facilitate a retreat for CEC members.  It was suggested that a retreat for all CEC members, primaries and alternates, should be planned well in advance so CEC members can plan their schedules accordingly.  Dante mentioned that the alternates do not have the same 10 hour per month allowance their counterparts do, so the retreat will have to be planned with that in mind.



Members of the Strategic Plan Work Group shared their work on the draft strategic plan including mission, vision, goals, and values.  The values piece led to a robust discussion in which most members around the table engaged.  The discussion mostly revolved around the respect, inclusion, and courage pieces with the conversation touching on allyship, empowerment, and what it means to intentionally include the voices of people facing institutional inequity.
