Muna welcomed the CEC members to the first meeting of the Citywide Equity Committee (CEC). Members did a quick intro and check in.
Muna asked for bureaus that do not have alternates to emphasize to their bureaus that alternates are needed. She suggested sharing the bylaws document with all those interested so they have a better understanding of the CEC’s work.
BYLAWS – REVIEW & ADOPT
Muna asked the group to take a look at the bylaws. She stated that it was necessary to approve and formally adopt the document today. The consensus was the document looked good.
STEERING COMMITTEE – NOMINATION & VOTING
Muna introduced the six nominees of the Steering Committee: Kyle Diesner, Carolina Gonzalez, Afifa Ahmed-Shafi, Patricia Weekley, Alejandro Vidales, and Stephen Bouffard. The nominees each spoke for approximately two minutes to highlight their passion, skills, and experience.
Then, each CEC member wrote down the names of their top five choices. Muna asked for a volunteer to help her tally the votes. Muna and Amy Julkowski tallied the votes. Muna announced the names of the following individuals who now comprise the new Steering Committee: Kyle Diesner, Carolina Gonzalez, Afifa Ahmed-Shafi, Patricia Weekley, and Alejandro Vidales.
Muna will add language to the bylaws that states alternates may not fill in for their colleagues who sit on the Steering Committee. Muna will plan a meeting with the Steering Committee soon. They will have two Steering Committee meetings each month to plan the work of the CEC.
SCHEDULE – 2ND CEC MONTHLY MEETING
CEC members voted on a new recurring day and time for the second CEC meeting of the month. They chose the 3rd Thursday from 9 – 11AM. The committee will have two meetings a month for a least the first quarter.
COMMON LANGUAGE – DISCUSSION
The CEC also reviewed the definition of key terms. Muna stated that all CEC members are expected to be familiar with the terms and know how to use them effectively. Members suggested that the CEC review its Strategic Plan, Bylaws, and Definitions once every six months to make any necessary changes.
CLOSING AND CHECK OUT
CEC members agreed that members need to get to know each other and develop a level of comfort and trust to work effectively together. Some members suggested sharing personal stories as a way of building relationships.
