Portland recognized for green technology, intracity cooperation

City planners from Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability are sharing our best practices with planners all over the world, most recently in Kunming, China.

Resulting from a Memo of Understanding between the mayors of Portland and Kunming, the project will propel Kunming into the coveted title of "Greenest City in China." In October 2013, Mayor Hales visited Mayor Li Wenrong to discuss strategies and best practices for adopting a low-carbon approach to city management. The work continues now with follow up trips to China by Portland BPS deputy director Michael Armstrong, visiting for four days in Kunming to . 

Funded by a grant by the Energy Foundation, the Portland delegation suggested several methods to help Kunming achieve Portland's famed density planning and low-carbon approaches.

Shanghai students visit City Hall

A delegation of 39 middle school students visited City Hall on Friday, January 17. While here, they learned about the role of government, civic engagement, and engaged in a robust discussion about the merits of the Galveston Plan. They also moved a 'bill' through the political process, with four votes Aye and one vote Nay. 

The students discussed their views of Portland and remarked that our city is green, healthy, and vibrant. They particularly liked the attention to parks, our crown jewel. These new Portland ambassadors will take much with them on their return to Shanghai.

Suzhou Association receives Sister City award

Sister Cities International awarded the Portland Suzhou Sister City Association with its Economic Development Award for 2014. The award will be presented in Washington DC and is a testament to the hard work that the association has played in conjunction with Portland's city leadership.

Japanese students visit City Hall

Students from Hirosaki, Japan, visited City Hall on January 7. They discussed the role of law and civic engagement. While at City Hall, the students did a mock "how a bill becomes a law in Portland" exercise. Unanimous 5-0 vote!
